Schiavone

Aldo Schiavone was born in Naples, where he graduated in law in 1966.
He taught at the Universities of Bari, Pisa and Florence.
In 1981 he became full professor of Roman law at the University of Florence. Since 2005 he has been full professor of Roman law at the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane (Florence, Naples).
From 1997 to 1999 he was Head of the Dipartmento di Teoria e Storia del Diritto at the University of Florence, and from 1999 to 2002 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law at the same University. Between 2002 and 2006 he was the Director of the Istituto di Studi Umanistici of the University of Florence. In 2006 he became Director of the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane.
He was elected Directeur de Recherche Invité at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, in 1985, 1993 and 1999.
In 1998 he obtained membership of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
Between 1980 and 1988 he was Director of the Fondazione 'Istituto Gramsci' in Rome. From 1989 to 1994 he was Dean of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici at the University of San Marino.
In 2005 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Achievements in Education, Culture, Science and Art by the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
In 2007 he was elected Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Science.
He is the founder of the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane (Florence and Naples), a state university devoted to advanced study and research in the fields of the human and social sciences.
In 2010 he was elected President of the Advisory Board of the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane.
Since 2010 he has been Director of the European Doctoral Programme for the Human and Social Sciences promoted by the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) in Paris, the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, and the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane (SUM) in Florence.
Since 1985 he has been a columnist of "La Repubblica", the most popular Italian newspaper.
